About This Site

Purpose

Montgomery County Civic Federation maintains this web site to provide communication to our members and friends, and to act as an archive for publications.

Editorial Policies

Content is placed on this web site because it is an on-line posting of an article from the monthly MCCF newsletter, of by the approval of the MCCF President. In some cases, the on-line version of the newsletter articles may contain more text than the newsletter version, if the newsletter article has been edited for space considerations.

There is some additional content on the web site which is part of the mechanics of navigating the web site or other helpful explanation about the web site (this page, for instance). There are also links to content outside this web site, where background information or sources would be helpful.

Specific editorial policy related to newsletter articles can be found in our Standing Resolutions:

We strongly encourage articles to be submitted to the editor by e-mail. They can be in any standard word processing format and ideally should use the format you see in the final newsletter (11-point Times New Roman font, etc.). All articles MUST be received by noon on the second Saturday preceding the delegate's assembly to be announced in the newsletter. Unless an article is mandated by the Bylaws or by the Executive Committee, the Editor has complete discretion as to whether or not it is published. Unless submitted by the Executive Committee, articles advocating only one side of an issue must either conform to a position taken by the Federation or be accompanied by a balancing article. The Editor may make spelling and grammatical corrections. Further, the editor may make changes for space, stylistic, or other reasons unless the author appends a request "Please make no major changes without consultation" to the article. Any such request will be honored, but may reduce the article's chances of appearing. Where space prohibits an article from appearing in the current issue, but the article is of continuing interest, it may be deferred to a future issue.

Guidelines for submitting content to this site can be found here.

Technical

This site is generously hosted by Community Web, Inc., an organization that helps community associations develop and host web sites.

The goal of MCCF is to provide web content in a "browser-neutral" fashion. As such, content is delivered as HTML, using Cascading Style Sheets for formatting and layout. We are avoiding the use of JavaScript, and you should not find any "Pop-Ups", "Pop-Unders", or HTML Cookies generated from this site. Also, client-side scripting is being avoided in the construction of this site, so everything should display normally if your browser has scripting turned off.

Since the site uses Cascading Style Sheets for formatting, this does imply that you are using a somewhat newer browser (Microsoft IE 5.5 or newer, Netscape 5 or newer, etc.). However, older browsers should work for reading, just with reduced formatting control.

We are making efforts to support common browsers and operating systems. However, we do not have the resources to test every possible combination. If you are having a specific comment or suggestion, please contact us as needed. The site tries to avoid large graphical elements which take a long time to download, depending on your connection speed. However, some larger pictures of MCCF events and PDF files of our newsletter are unavoidably large and will take a while to download on slower connections.

The site layout is optimized for 800 x 600 pixel displays, primarily in respects to headers, footers, and the left side navigation elements. It should wrap to larger sizes with little impact, smaller size monitors will undoubtedly have formatting issues with tables, images, and some other layout elements. However, the text should be readable. The header image contains graphics stylized with the State Flag of Maryland and the County Flag of Montgomery County. Note that the county flag is copyrighted by Montgomery County and is used with permission.

Privacy Policy

MCCF is not collecting any information from its web site currently.

Accessibility

Accessibility policy for this web site is still being formed. It is our intention to produce content in a way that conforms to the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Accessibility Initiative so that it is accessible regardless of disability.

Site Changes

We are trying to maintain a list of changes to this web site to make it easier to track content changes as they are made. This should allow you to check this list to see what has been updated since the last time you visited. We are also establishing an RSS news feed about site changes for those that are using RSS tools to get updates. Our Site Change list can be found here.

"RSS" is a technology that allows a web site to broadcast news about their site to people that are running an RSS client. RSS information can also be aggregated into larger RSS content providers that are trying to create a channel of information on a specific topic.

MCCF is going to keep an RSS newsfeed running that is synchronized to the "Site Changes" list. For those that want to be updated when there is a change, and that run an RSS client, this will allow you to be notified about changes without having to connect to the site. The RSS newsfeed can be found here: [Valid RSS]

Specific (and technical) information about RSS can be found here: http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss. There are a number of client tools for receiving RSS feeds, a list of which can be found here: http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/directory/5/aggregators.
